As in many other European cities, the demand for reasonably priced accommodation options is very high, and therefore student housing facilities are limited. At the same time, the city’s private rental market is considerably cheaper than that in other European cities, and therefore is rather appealing to international students studying at RSU.
In general, upon their arrival in Riga, students choose to stay in hotels or hostels, and only then do they start looking for long-term accommodation options. When choosing where to live, many factors should be considered, the various districts of Riga being one of the most important ones. To help you with that, we have drafted an information sheet on the disctricts of Riga and some renting tips. We strongly advise you to take notice of these suggestions, so please click on the document to the right, and read it through. <

The cost of living in Riga is similar to most European cities of its size. Most students coming to Latvia from other EU countries find Latvia to be even cheaper than their home countries; however, the cost of living depends very much on one’s choice of lifestyle. As a rough guide, we recommend a minimum of EUR 600 per month (including accommodation) for expenses such as phone, food, study materials, local transport, hobbies, leisure, etc. The table on the right gives an overview of the costs of living in Riga.
Average low per month Average high per month
Rent EUR 250 EUR 400
Food EUR 200 EUR 400
Utilities and services EUR 100 EUR 200
Public transport EUR 30 EUR 30
Entertainment EUR 50 EUR 150
Other EUR 100 EUR 200
Total EUR 730 EUR 1380
