he Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning is the only higher educational institution in Latvia offering versatile education in the sphere of territorial planning, architecture and restoration of cultural monuments. The faculty offers different levels of academic and professional study programmes in architecture. Owing to professional academic staff, the faculty can also offer specialization in interior and landscape architecture. FAUP incorporates: Department of Architecture and Urban Planning; Professor’s Group of History of Architecture and Restoration of Cultural Monuments; Department of Fine Arts. As regards the number of students, the faculty is traditionally the smallest among the other RTU faculties. However, that is not to imply that there is little interest in studying architecture – on the contrary, every year the competition for the right to «study at the Architects» remains very high. AUP graduates are specialists in architecture and development of environment and are employed by various design organizations and companies, as well as state and municipal institutions dealing with planning, architectural management and supervision functions. FAUP is also the most significant research centre, focusing on architecture and environmental development problems and systematically conducting research pertaining to the history of architecture and protection of cultural monuments, theory of architecture, urban development and spatial planning. The principal focus areas are and will be: the development of the principles of form shaping in the contemporary Latvian architecture; the development of systems and structures for managing urban planning and planning of environment-friendly solutions; the optimization and spatial development of structures in an urban environment; the history of Latvian architecture and urban development; the development of the recreation system in Latvia.
